Black mold that grows on bread
I tried to verify.
A loaf of bread was placed in each of the two Food Fresh Keepers. The presence or absence of a photocatalyst (power on and power off) was used to test the extent to which mold growth inside the cabinet could be suppressed. The experiment began on November 22nd. Nine days later, on December 1st, black mold had grown extensively on the surface of the bread without the photocatalyst. On the other hand, no mold growth was observed on the bread with the photocatalyst. The photocatalyst was able to suppress the growth of black mold.
These are the results of our experiments and are not a guarantee.
Mold suppression effect test
A comparison was made between bread stored at room temperature inside the refrigerator (photo on the right) and bread stored outside the refrigerator (photo on the left). As a result, mold did not grow on the bread inside the refrigerator, but mold did grow on the bread outside the refrigerator.

Seasonal fruit, mandarin oranges
I tried to verify.
Following the experiment on black mold on bread, we tested it on mandarin oranges, a fruit that is essential for this coming season. Mandarin oranges stored at room temperature without the photocatalyst had a dry, wrinkled surface. On the other hand, mandarin oranges treated with the photocatalyst had a shiny surface and looked delicious. We believe this helped to maintain the freshness of the mandarin oranges.
Mochi is prone to mold
I tried to verify.
Following the experiments on black mold on bread and mandarin oranges, we tested it on freshly pounded rice cakes for a week. Compared to the rice cakes stored with the photocatalyst, the rice cakes stored at room temperature without the photocatalyst showed dense mold growing on the surface.

We asked Yoshitatsu Shoten in Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, who shares Caltech's desire to protect the environment and its commitment to Japanese-made products, to make the wooden handle.
The material is made from thinned Yoshino cypress. Because it uses the offcuts left over from sawing pillars, there is absolutely no deforestation and every single log is used to its fullest. Enjoy the warmth of Yoshino cypress and delicious food every day.

As part of our efforts to achieve the SDGs, Caltech is using recycled cardboard for packaging boxes, reviewing designs that use excessive multicolored paint, and working to reduce the amount of platemaking film and ink used.
What is a photocatalyst?More than just an air purifierIt can be used
The photocatalyst used in this Food Fresh Keeper is the same as that used in air purifiers. Just as an air purifier cleans a room, cleaning the inside of the Food Fresh Keeper helps prevent mold growth and breaks down gases that cause fruit to spoil.
In this way, we are considering expanding the application of photocatalysis beyond air purification and food waste reduction to water purification. In this sense, photocatalysis is a very promising technology for achieving the SDGs that the world is striving for.

A photocatalytic filter is installed at the back of the cabinet. When the usage time exceeds approximately three months, a lamp will light up to notify you that it is time for maintenance.
